It is quite easy to get from Malta to the nearby Sicily. Virtu Ferries ( operates a service from Valletta to either Pozzallo or Catania. We travelled during the high-tourist season in July-August 2011 and took the morning ferry from Valletta Harbour (6.30 a.m departure, the second departure for the day being in the late afternoon) to Pozzallo. The tickets cost EUR 55 per adult one way or EUR 95 open return. The sailing takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes and the views from the sea over Valletta in the morning sunshine are simply breathtaking. For those venturing further afield in Italy it is best to take a ferry to Catania for a short transfer to Catania airport (the other airport in Sicily is situated in Palermo). We would like to note that during winter months the ferries do not run daily and it is an absolute MUST to check the timetable on-line or otherwise well in advance of intended travel date. The ferry operator also offers a day-tour from Valletta to Sicily. The package includes overland bus excursion to Taormina or Syracuse and Mount Etna. However, we would strongly recommend shopping around in Valletta for best day-tour programs and prices with local travel agencies. All day tours include a visit to Mount Etna.
