Charyn Canyon is not a well-known place for many, but it is as spectacular as the Grand Canyon in the US. It is about 200 kilometers east of Almaty, Kazakhstan and very close to the Chinese border. We hired a guide with a driver from a local travel agency in Almaty who were very reliable; they should know that part of the 3 hours trip is off road and need an appropriate vehicle. Make sure you agree the payment for a day tour in advance. We went there late September and were told that the best seasons to go there are in spring and autumn; summers are too hot and winters are bitter cold and snowy.
